Subject: Spermicidal FoamQUESTION: My boyfriend and I use spermicidal foam a lot. When you first apply you don't go dry for a while.... but after a while I do become dry. when I do get dry, should I apply more and does it still have the same affect as if it were just applied? REPLY: You know - spermicidal foam, when used for contraception (ie, no condoms), has a spectacularly high failure rate - about 29% in the first year. It does not prevent the spread of STD's, and in fact - because it contains Non-oxynol 9 - which can irritate the vaginal lining making you more receptive to the transmission of HIV. In short, I think spermicidal foam sucks. Go to www.plannedparenthood.com and look for a better method of birth control. When you switch, this may also address your dryness. - KT . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .
